You know what they say – “when life hands you apples – make apple cider”!

Of course, to make apple cider you need an apple press.  And lucky for you, you can now own your very own, homemade cider press for only $75! And the good news is – you don’t even have to build it.

Darby Jones, one of our great Fruit Share Volunteers has offered his services to build a custom made cider press for the first 5 people to sign up!  All you pay is $75 for the raw materials and Darby will build you your very own cider press.  For an additional $25 he’ll even deliver it to your doorstep.

Not only will you get an awesome cider press sure to make you the envy of your neighbourhood, but you’ll also be supporting Fruit Share.  Darby is offering his services free of charge!  All proceeds will go directly to help support the programs of Fruit Share (except for the $25 delivery charge).

This is what you’ll be getting – a wooden, homemade cider press with 4 press plates, a hydraulic jack, a spigot, a catch basin and an adjustable wood frame.   It will be built following the instructions found on the DIY page of this website. To get a first hand look at what this cider press looks like and to taste a sample of fresh pressed apple cider join us on Saturday, February 25 at 1:45 in the Oxford Room (M) for our session called “Bushels of Apples”.

If you’re interested in this spectacular offer, email [email protected].  Hurry, only the first 5 people are eligible for this offer.

Dehydrated Raw Apple Almond Bars

In our “Bushels of Apples” presentation on February 25 at the Growing Local Conference we’ll be sharing taste samples of several recipes for dehydrated apples.  Here’s one of my favourites.  It’s also one of the many great recipes you’ll find in the Prairie Fruit book which will be available this spring.

Dehydrated Raw Apple Almond Bars

Yield: Makes 20 - 24 1x3” bars

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Almonds
  • 3 Apples
  • ¼ cup Apple Jelly or Honey
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Nutmeg
  • ½ tsp Almond Extract

Instructions

  1. Chop almonds in food processor until fine; transfer to a bowl.
  2. Core and slice apples into quarters (do not peel). Chop in food processor until fine.
  3. Mix apples and remainder of ingredients into the almonds.
  4. Place heaping spoonfuls on lined dehydrator screens and form into bar shapes at least ¼“ (6 mm) thick.
  5. Dehydrate at 115°F (46°C) for 20 to 24 hours. Flip halfway through.
  6. Bars should be dry throughout but still pliable. Cool completely and store tightly sealed in a dry, dark place for several months.

Volunteer Darby Jones and I will be representing Fruit Share at this year’s Growing Local Conference.  We’ll be sharing tips, recipes, blueprints and ideas for what to do with “Bushels of Apples”.

I was blown away by the impressive, informative and all-encompassing information and sharing that took place at last year’s conference.  I’m eager to learn, share and network again this year!

Fruit Share on stage at TEDxManitoba

The stage is set for TEDxManitoba on Thursday, February 9, 2012 and Fruit Share will be there (at 9:20 am to be exact)!

What is TEDx Manitoba?  It’s an inspiring and fulfilling event for those who are curious and interested in learning and sharing great ideas.  This is Manitoba’s second TEDx and it promises to be amazing.  Fifteen speakers and performers will share the stage to share stories, ideas and experiences that showcase some world changing ideas and initiatives.

Fruit Share is one of 15 topics that will be part of this event.  And we’re thrilled, because we believe it is definitely an idea worth sharing.

Attendance at TEDx Manitoba is free, but it is limited to 100 participants that had to apply to attend.  Seriously, it’s that good –  people apply to go to this meeting of the minds!  I was fortunate enough to attend last year and I’m still speechless, which rarely happens!

But, even if you’re not one of the lucky 100 that gets to attend, you can still get in on the action via live stream video.  That’s right, TEDxManitoba will be available to everyone online in real-time. Whether you just take in a few talks or the full day, watch it alone or gather a group, it’s really simple. Just log on to our homepage www.TEDxManitoba.com on February 9th. The live stream will be there for you.

Want to plan out your day in advance? Check out the complete schedule.  Fruit Share is on at 9:20 am.

I’m thrilled to be part of this event!
