is there a listing of great zone 3 fruit plant options for someone looking to provide fruit/nuts etc…? I have three old Birch that are not long for this world and I want to replace them with some useful and hearty option.

Your best bet is to look in catalogues or talk to local nurseries that specializes in fruit (Aubins, Jeffries, Kackenhoff, Discovery Enterprises, Plum Ridge Farms, T&T Seeds). They’ll give you some ideas based on the amount and type of space you have available. Our Backyard Guide deals with existing fruit, we won’t be able to delve into planting fruit – perhaps in a future edition!
