Check the neck!
You often can’t tell the ripeness of a pear by looking at it – but a gentle squeeze to the neck of the pear (skinny area by the stem) can help. If it ‘gives’ when you squeeze, they’re likely ready for picking.
Honestly, picking one and tasting it is your best bet. If it’s sweet (or nearing sweet) and soft, get picking! And of course, be gentle. Once they’re ripe, they’re a bit delicate.
