Guide to Backyard Fruit
Thank you to the Manitoba Alternative Food Research Alliance (MAFRA) and the Canadian Home Economics Foundation (CHEF) for funding to develop this Guide to Backyard Fruit. The Guide is intended to help homeowners identify and manage fruit growing in their backyard. Once it is complete it will include information on identifying fruit, recipes, preserving, storing and where and how to share your fruit with others.
As various sections are completed, we will post them here. Check back often as we continue to add more resources.

The final resource will include the following information:
Identifying Manitoba Fruit
- pictures, descriptions and illustrations to help homeowners identify what’s in their backyard
- particularly useful to new homeowners and new Manitobans
Recipes for Manitoba Fruit
- recipes for enjoying local fruit
- a minimum of 2 recipes for using for backyard Manitoba fruit (eg. Rhubarb, cherries, apples, crab apples, grapes, etc.)
- links to other organizations and sources of recipes (e.g. PFGA)
Preserving Manitoba Fruit
- complete how-to instructions for preserving backyard Manitoba fruit
- a minimum of 2 preserving techniques for backyard Manitoba fruit
- links to other organizations and sources of preserving techniques
Harvesting Options
- complete listing of organizations/groups who help harvesting fruit ( eg.Fruit Share, neighbourhood associations, Hutterite colonies, etc.)
- Sharing Options
- complete listing of organizations that will accept fruit and any specific criteria that must be met
